Marlboro Township History

Marlboro Township was 150 years old on February 17, 1998.  On that date in 1848, by an act of the State Legislature, Marlboro became an independent political entity.  Earlier, it had been part of Freehold Township ever since English, Scottish, and Dutch settlers established the first farms in the 1600s.
Largely unknown to most of its current residents, Marlboro's history is a chronicle that is rich in tradition. In fact, its history might be called typical of the growth of the nation outside the large cities. From the earliest settlements until fairly recently, Marlboro was a rural community composed of a number of small hamlets with names like Morganville, Robertsville, Wickatunk, Bradevelt, Topanemus, Hillsdale, Montrose, and Pleasant Valley.

The exact time when the name Marlboro came into use is not known. For many years it had been called Marlborough, but there is no documentation when it was changed to Marlboro. History has it that the name came from the discovery of marl on a farm just east of the village in 1768. Marl is composed of the remains of prehistoric fish, clams, etc. from the period when New Jersey was part of the ocean bed. Farmers used marl to improve the soil in the days before commercial fertilizers and there was a heavy demand for it. The export of marl to all parts of the country became one of Marlboro's first industries.

At the time of its incorporation, Marlboro had a population of about 1,500 and today, it stands at well over 36,000. CNN and Money magazine selected Marlboro as one of the top 10 safest places to live and a top 100 place to live in America.

Historical Sights
Old Scots Burial Grounds
On the National Register of Historic Places since August 2001, Old Scots Burial Grounds, Marlboro - Circa 1705. Under active study, Archaeologist Gerard Scharfenberger is working to excavate the foundation of the original Old Scots Meeting House as well as any unmarked graves on the property. This is the original location where the congregation of the Old Tennent Presbyterian Church once met as well as part of the site where the Battle of Monmouth was fought.

Battle of Monmouth
The Battle of Monmouth as well as a number of skirmishes were fought in and around Marlboro Township during the American Revolutionary War. Many area placards and signs can be found on the local roads to identify specific local events from the battle. The Marlboro Township area farms were often raided by the British for food supplies and local livestock taken from area farmers. Following defeat in this battle, the British retreat from the area to their ships in the bay. A local state park, Monmouth Battlefield State Park, nearby in Freehold Township and Manalapan Township provides local reference to this historic event.

Township Historic Markers
Many of the houses and buildings located in the area commonly known as the "center of town" (around the intersection of Route 79 and School Road), are older historic buildings. Many of them contain signs in front of them identifying the individual buildings and their historic significance. Among the buildings identified, one building was one of the first churches in the area (now a dance studio), another was the childhood home of Garret Augustus Hobart - 24th Vice President of the United States (now an art studio), and another was the old parsonage (now a hair cutting business).

Liberty Hall/Hardy Blacksmith Shop
Liberty Hall also went by the name of Alfred Hardy & Son Blacksmith Shop, is a small brick building. It is located on Route 79 in the small section of Morganville. The building was reportedly built around 1880. The building name can faintly be seen in scripted letters painted over the door of the building. The blacksmith shop operated into the early 20th century and was one of the last blacksmith operations in the area. Following the blacksmith shop closing, the building housed a machine shop until 1942 when a small defense contractor, Lavoie Laboratories bought it to produce radio gear for the military.] In 1966 Lavoie sold it to Entron Industries, a manufacturer of missile circuitry that occupied the building until the mid 1970s.
